What a stonker of a bloodbath!!!
megantwisk5 May 2020
This episode was blinding from start to finish. Great battle scenes, blood squirting everywhere, heads exploding, Danes literally falling into traps. Whoever has choreographed / trained the actors in swordplay has done an outstanding job.

Can I give it 11 out of 10

Warning: Spoilers
What an episode of tv!! I thought episodes 2 & 3 were excellent, but this episode had so much intrigue, drama, action & heart break. I felt so bad for Brida. So delighted for Aethelflaed. So shocked by Steapa. And so enamored by Uhtred & his men!!! Really really excellent tv!! I don't know how the show can maintain this pace - these passed 4 episodes would be a normal season on other shows. But I know there is lots more story to get through & I'm excited to do it!! Thank you to everyone involved for an excellent season thus far

Wow

Wow. Simply WOW. S04E04 was the best episode thus far. Intrigue, uncertainty, fear, hope, faith and bravery all coalescing into an epic battle that was one for the books. How can they possibly top this?? This is a tv series done right.

11 stars - Battle of Tattenhall, 910
paulddb27 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some reviewers state the writers got it wrong. No way.

This episode has dramatic battle scenes and covers the Battle of Tattenhall (5th August 910, near Wolverhampton, England).

In the real battle, Danes travelled by boat to Mercia from Northern England, where they were well-established.

Combined forces of Anglo-Saxons from Wessex and Mercia trapped the Danes, prevented them from returning to their boats, killing thousands.

The battle virtually ended Danish occupation of the north, and the allies were free to deal with Danes who had settled further south. Final defeat of the Danes came in 937 at the Battle of Brunanburh under King Athelstan.

This is an EXCITING series, not a documentary, and of course the fighting has to be extended, otherwise it would be a 1-season show.

GREAT EPISODE.

Classic
jmsf-0726110 May 2020
Just another great episode from the Last Kingdom! It has become classic the fourth episode to be one of the best from each season of TLK, and this is the perfect example of this. The performance of the actors are amazing, the camera work was superb, the music outstanding. Besides preferences, The Last Kingdom is very, very good. It grows from season to season and, for me, is already a classic. Long Live the Last Kingdom.

But let's be honest, this was not one of the best battles in TV history, as some other reviewer here suggested. Not even close haha

Been enjoyin all seasons...

The tale of Uthred is a great one.

My only bone to pick is the opening credit theme. While in tune, the vocalist clearly graduated from the Yoko Ono Academy of Voice. Grating does not cover it.

Knowing that there is a Netflix movie which follows season 5 does not diminish the tension of the drama unfolding. It enhances it for me! Makes me want to see just how Uthred continues to fit into the scheme of things.

And like many I have looked up Uthred and, as King Alfred promised, no mention of him is made in the British historic chronicles. But there were indeed several figures who were called Uthred of Benningburgh and thus... well, perhaps!!

Battle royale

I wasn't expecting the big battle royale to happen mid season, which begs the question... what is to come for the remaining episodes? Stay tuned I guess.

The writers need to step up their game!

Warning: Spoilers
So i was pretty surprised to have this much action so early in the season. And the action is really good. The coreography is on point.

However I have a huge problem with the writing and the enormous plotholes in this season.

First in this episode we have Uthred suffering from Beoccas death. I think it was done well, but it doesnt spark anything in me for some reason. Beocca character had its weaknesses and his character developement was rather usual.

Another thing I had problems with is the fact that everybody is feels so damn stupid. Alfreds daughter and the one character that actually looked very smart (Aldhelm) go back to Aylsbury. They stay there the night for what reason? And the next day they rather pray for the children than run away.

Next thing on the line: they set free Knuts children. So two dane children are set free in the middle of Mercia. A land that is at war with the Danes. A land that just got raided, murdered and raped by Danes. As Uthred said in the end to Knut: "You will not see them grow old". No kidding? They probably already dead.

And lastly the extremely annoying thing of information. Nobody has a clue about anything it seems. Aethelred is in East Anglia raiding for what it felt like months, while Knut did the same thing in Mercia. And not one messenger was able to make it to Aethelred? Somehow Eduard learned of the attack and dispatched a messenger, who then finally reached the Mercian troops.

And let me come to the last thing I found rather annoying in this episode. Theplotarmor of certain characters. Sure Uthred Junior has his fathers blood, whatever that is supposed to get you. But for some reason the boy who never before touched a sword is a badass Danekiller now.

Also Aldhelm and Aethelflaed somehow get surrounded by enemies, who just stand there and are unchallanged eventhough the Mercians already arrived by teleporting from East Anglia. But good thing Eduard is here aswell who approaches the battleline and stops within meters, to shoot an arrow into a guy. Really? This was so dumb on so many levels I wanted to stop the episode.

Steapas death was one of the only things that was realistic in this episode.

I know this is a TV Show and you need to dramatize stuff in order for the viewers to enjoy it, but this is not enjoyable. I hope this gets better in the next episodes.

P. S. Finan was the best thing that happened to the show. And luckily that hasn't changed yet.

Steapa
klajdi_realmadrid30 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was a little expecting this since Steapa wasn't getting screen time anymore, he had no lines and was there just as a visual character. I enjoyed this episode. But rather than that, I see people dying right and left in this show, and even though they have been around for a while, their death has no impact on the viewer. We never connect to any of the characters. And the formula is always the same.

There is a strong Dane, who looks like can crush anyone, then Uhtred joins the party and saves the day. No one appreciates what Uhtred does and he gets banned. Then there comes another enemy, who looks stronger, they call again Uhtred to save them. At least Uhtred lost Berbanburg, he can loose too in this show. The only episode that had unexpected twists.

Get a new writer please. Make thing interesting for us to really care. We love the fighting, it is really good. The director does a good job most of the times. Episode one had so many bad transitions it hurt my brain and my eyes. I felt like I was spinning on a roller coaster. The music most of the times is good.

I would like to see a season where we start to care for each character. Stop making Uhtred like someone that is a good person but no one appreciates. That is a bait formula. To make us feel sorry for him. Don't Jon Snow him.

I am looking forward, really, really interested to watch how Aethelstan story will develop.

I would like Uhtred to teach him how to fight and how to think, and at a point where he grows and Uhtred abandons him because he fears that Aethelstan will become like all the others that didn't appreciate Uhtred. But Aethelstan becomes the king of all United Kingdom and appoints Uhtred as the Lord of Berbanburg.

The worst episode
blueoneyes24 March 2022
The worst episode from the entire series.

They ruin the series.

It's obvious that Netflix is not so good when he take this title and spent no money.

The worst scenario I ever seen.
