Interesting erotic drama that doesn't fully deliver! [+59%]

Chathuram, directed by Siddharth Bharathan, is a femme-fatale drama that delivers in parts. Written by the director himself alongside novelist Vinoy Thomas, many of the plot points are predictable (if you've seen the trailer) and play out exactly as anticipated. However, the lead performers (Swasika, Roshan, Alencier, Santhy) sink their teeth into the minimalist screenplay and come up with compelling feats. Swasika effortlessly scorches the screen in the role of Selena whose current motivations are obvious. She's the kind who'll take extreme measures to achieve what she wants, including seduction and emotional manipulation. Whether it's being sultry, dramatic, or massy (in a couple of instances), Swasika is on point (credit to Stephy Zaviour's costume design too!). The chess board is THE perfect metaphor.

Alencier may get typecasted as the chauvinistic husband, but he's pretty good at it, especially in scenes where he cannot speak. The character of Balthazar is right up Roshan's alley and even when the emotional pivot of the film falls upon him in the second half, he's able to hold up his end of the bargain. Not much happens in terms of plot in the second half, and while there are a few moments of thrill, it largely focuses on Balthazar's dilemma. Since each of the leads is sufficiently grey-shaded, it alway remains interesting to see what happens to them in end. But the finale lacks that much-needed punch. It works only from an allergorical perspective - beginning in a car journey and ending in one - with key characters switching seats.

Swasika Shines

Nearly 12 years before Fahadh Fazil started the deep French kissing Feud in Malayalam film industry from his movie Chappa kurish. Now Tovino and Roshan Mathew entered into that row.

Speaking about the movie, the film's direction by Sidharth Bharathan is truly commendable, and Swasika's performance in this Erotic Thriller Drama is exceptional. It's hard to imagine anyone else in the lead role, as Swasika truly owns the character. This movie is a game changer for Swasika, who has previously been relegated to supporting roles. Her portrayal in this film demonstrates her incredible talent and versatility, proving that she can excel in any role she takes on.

Excellent cinematography, casting, script and thrilling elements. Actors did their best, especially Swasika, Rosha and that supporting actor. The ambience is superb.

The bg score still fresh in my mind. Very calm and ambient presence feel. Siddharth Bharatan excelled his father in a way. Felt like watching a hollywood movie. Excellent direction. One need to watch it either in theatre or atleast using a proper headset, otherwise not able to fully realise.

Expecting more such thrillers from Siddharth Bharatan. This is one of the best movie that I watched in 2022. Hats off to the entire team. Malayalam film industry needs more films like this,

Memorable thriller with erotic essence!

Just wow...witnessed stellar performances by Swasika, Roshan & Alencier in a well made thriller by Sidharth Bharathan! 👏

Swasika did her part exceptionally well and she looked steaming-hot throughout the film. She carries the film on her shoulders and kept us engaged in the story without a moment of lag.

Every character has got grey shades..and layers of subtle acting. Thrilling story line, perfect casting and interesting picturisation and background score are plus points.

Haven't seen anything like this in mollywood for a long time. There is not a bit of vulgarity and this piece of art deserves big screen admiration.
