Turning Back The Clock
SHU_Movies10 January 2024
This was a solid first episode to the series. Although most of it goes over Maya's backstory and retells the story told in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye for the people that haven't seen it (or maybe can't remember about the character over two years after that series released), it's pretty good! It expands on Maya's character in a way Hawkeye never did, shows the triumphant return of Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk and sets-up the rest of the series very nicely

One of the key points with this episode is that it's much darker and more violent than anything else we've gotten in the MCU. It very much reminds me of watching the Defenders Saga on Netflix in the mid-late 2010s, and it's exactly the gritty and street-level content the MCU has desperately needed for some time now!

1st episode just ok
felixrod1211 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First episode so far is not bad but nothing great either. I read some reviews one in particular asked what if you don't know sign language that the episode did not have subtitles. Idk where that person was watching the episode but there were subtitles thru out the whole episode and I never had an issue with that. If that is the reason for your low rating maybe you should learn how to hit the subtitles button in Disney plus. Anyway 1st episode is ok so far loved seeing Daredevil and Ronin, I hope there's more of Daredevil in the coming episodes and not just in this one episode. One down four to go.

Great Start
deadpoolrocks-0835910 January 2024
As a consistent comic book reader I've never really gotten to know echo. After finishing the first episode I can gladly say I'm very intrigued by the character and I can't wait for more. The emotional parts hit, and the action is some of the best. Especially that one fight that I won't spoil. I'm am most curious right now how and if this show will incorporate daredevil and kingpin but if not a lot I believe this show will do great anyways and might actually be more worth not including them a lot because her story seems interesting enough on it's own. If marvel play this right it could be one of their best shows to date.

Messy first 30 minutes, must watch Hawkeye before you watch this
hotrobinproductions12 January 2024
Creators behind this show kept saying "you don't need to watch anything before this to know what's going on" or whatever, but that's baloney, this thing is a mess without watching Hawkeye, the first 30 minutes alone just feels like a complete recap off of Hawkeye.

The action is fun & worth while & adding new additions, but if this thing was going to regurgitate used scenes from the tv show Hawkeye I would highly just recommend watching Hawkeye. Because even I was confused watching this show in the first 30 minutes.

Good writing should be embedded as the story continues, I'm sure there was a much better way at doing this first episode than to just cram in so much scenes we already seen before & just adding new ones. It kind of feels lazy, all they needed to do was start it off when echo is injured and riding that bike, boom that's how you start this show, but no...

Anyways, that's my huge nit pick with this pilot, it shouldn't have done that, as the show FINALLY begins, we get a solid story here.

Great beginning
robert-1983810 January 2024
The shows first episode is awesome and badass! One of the greatest first episodes to a marvel show. That fight scene is great and I will definitely be rewatching that. The episode delves into some unexpected supernatural elements which is pretty cool. The visuals/practical effects are nice and the overall vibe feels more like a tvshow. It does suffer from some pacing issues but only minor and doesnt really affect the episode much. You can feel its a 5 episode season since certain themes could be explored for longer. Alaqua Cox is great and shouldn't be dismissed as echo. I have a feeling this show has scrapped echos comic book character competely and is just using the branding/name from the comics for this new version of echo who is totally different. This may be a negative to any comic book echo fans but the charcater is still deeply intriguing and exciting to watch. 8/10.

An Interesting Character
jameswyattranks10 January 2024
It would be interesting to know how this episode feels to somebody who hasn't seen hawkeye, it certainly recaps her side of things, including scenes from the actual show. I don't think those scenes overstayed their welcome and the additional scenes enhanced them for me. The fights, what motivates her, the surrounding cast are all great.

Very curious to see where we go from here in terms of the story but this builds up Maya as a character very well. Kingpin is such an interesting character too, his presence is felt even when not on the screen. When he is on the screen it reminds you just how terrifying he is.

A major disappointment
leothewsp6710 January 2024
Once again, Marvel has done it, created a show that could've been spectacular, but failed at it. The writing and plot of the show is terrible. Honestly, I don't even know why it's rated TV-MA. It felt like all the other marvel Disney+ shows not the Netflix Marvel shows. The first episode was Great and had a great set up, but everything else went steeply downhill from there. The actors and actresses did an amazing job in their roles. The only problem is that Marvel seems to not know how to write a good script anymore. And even though they gave it a TV-MA rating, it's not at all TV-MA it's very light in all areas, which can be good but I don't feel like that's what Wilson Fisk is supposed to be. It reminded me more of the Hawkeye TV series in terms of violence and action. Not like the Netflix daredevil series that we were hoping for.

Regular start
rafamiko10 January 2024
Lots of filler or material to catch up, basically if you didn't watch the Hawkeye series. A little rushed too, but it's got its positives. The chemistry between characters is really good and I quite like the dialogues. And the fight scenes, the few we got, and the choreographies for such, are great. For this it helps a lot the sound mixing; given the character of Echo is deaf, we get her perspective of the fights and tbh it's really interesting.

So far, the only stuff that has not been convicing is what already wasn't convincing back in Hawkeye. Really hope the creator will turn that around because that series was mediocre at best. No much more conclusions since this was only a setup character.

Must Watch Hawkeye before this!!!
moviesfilmsreviewsinc25 January 2024
Echo's season premiere introduced Maya's personal history, starting with her youth on the Tamaha Reservation. However, the episode's quick pace and lack of time for key moments, such as her mother's car accident, can leave viewers questioning the importance of certain characters or events. The episode succeeds in its casting and action, with Aqua Cox commanding attention with her stoicism and vulnerability. The rest of the cast, including Zahn McClarnon's William Lopez, Tantoo Cardinal's Chula, and Graham Greene's Skully, establish key character dynamics and traits that will likely inform Maya's journey. Vincent D'Onofrio and Charlie Cox also make short appearances as Kingpin and Daredevil, respectively. The episode's action features a punchy fight involving Maya and Daredevil, which serves as a tone-setter for the rest of the series. While some comic book flair is thrown in, it doesn't distract from the rest of the action. Echo, a Disney Plus series, has been released, and the first episode has shown that it is a slow-moving, cobbled-together mix of action and drama. Alaqua Cox, the lead star, appears bored and awkward in most scenes, which may be indicative of the audience's feelings. Her ability to not emote is impressive, but she seems to want to be anywhere but in front of the camera. The rest of the season seems to focus heavily on flashbacks to flesh out Maya's past and her ancestry and lineage. While the trailer made it seem like a dark, gritty action thriller, this show has fared poorly and may not save the rapidly declining MCU anytime soon. In Episode 1, a group of strange men and women emerge from underground pools of water, causing their hands to glow orange. They circle around an ancient pool, causing the place to shake and crumble. Despite their efforts, they are teleported out into the wilderness, where their skin cracks to reveal Native Americans underneath. Chafa leads their people forward, while Maya (Echo) and her cousin Bonnie discuss their origin story. In Oklahoma 2007, a family sits together signing. Echo and her mother get into a car accident, leading to Maya's death. Chaula blames William, while Maya blames herself for the accident. Maya is taken away from the house and separated from Bonnie and Chula, heading to New York. William wants Maya to have a better life than what he has, but some of this stems from shady dealings with Kingpin. In the present, Maya Lopez, a prosthetic leg-bound fighter, sparses with a swordsman who kills her men. She nearly emotes while he's dying, but Bonnie's messages don't quell her rage. Maya breaks into a bike dealership, steals a bike, and destroys a cop car. She's arrested, but the Kingpin saves her. Fisk, concerned about her rage, explains his own father's death at 12. He offers to help her release her rage constructively, with a job. Maya's rage is fueled by her past experiences, and her rage is fueled by her own father's death at 12. Maya is tasked with assisting Fisk's goons in removing a gang from his territory. However, Daredevil arrives and starts sparring with Maya, leading to a clumsy fight. Fisk is impressed and calls Maya part of his family. Maya confronts Kingpin and shoots him, prompting a five-month timeline. Maya suffers a stomach gash and is able to heal with a tight bandage. She returns to Oklahoma, where her Native American ancestors' visions begin to bleed through. Biscuits and his dog Billy Jack show up, signifying to Maya's past. Maya spies Bonnie from afar but decides not to get involved. Instead, she searches for Henry at a skate rink. As they discuss private conversations, the assistant, Vickie, asks about an alleged bounty for the "King Killer," which is Maya. The story highlights the importance of understanding the past and the impact of characters like Maya on the present. Henry and Maya spy on Fisk's Shipping business from a water tower. Maya wants a train to send a message to him. Henry refuses to bring war to their town, but Maya believes Kingpin's time is up and it's time for a Queen. She's driven by vengeance and power to avenge her father. As the episode ends, Kingpin is alive in the hospital, but has lost his eye.

S1.E1 - Decent But Not Great [7/10]
panagiotis199311 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for Echo Season 1 Episode 1 ''Chafa''. I don't expect much from this show but I will give it a chance. The way Maya lost her mother and her leg is tragic. The action scene with Daredevil was good but it could have been better. Im wondering how is it possible to fight like that with a fake leg though. The question is who killed Maya's father? Was it Hawkeye or Fisk? Im confused. Overall the episode was decent but some times I felt bored. Maya is not interesting enough to be the main character and to have her own show. But I guess I will keep watching for D'Onofrio's Kingpin. My rating is 7/10.

Can't be said enough... REPRESENTATION MATTERS
yoshimasu_k26 January 2024
I don't follow Marvel and have only seen four of their movies plus Jessica Jones. That being said, I'm enjoying Echo and thrilled to see Native American representation in a huge Hollywood franchise!!!

At the same time, it's obvious that Marvel isn't pouring piles of money into every project these days and are prioritizing QUANTITY over quality. It's just too bad that Echo is being released during this ongoing period of superhero fatigue, because imagine the budget and care it would've received during Marvel's heyday!

Echo is fine - nothing spectacular, honestly - but the focus on Choctaw culture and Native-influenced fantastical elements really make it special. Plus, star Alaqua Cox is a BAD ASS!!!

I've read countless of comments discounting diversity and representation, but I imagine the majority of those commenters have seen PLENTY OF VERSIONS of themselves in mainstream film/TV.

Chafa
Prismark1010 January 2024
Made under the Marvel Spotlight banner. It has less emphasis on the MCU and more on character driven stories. Even then Daredevil shows up and there is footage of Hawkeye.

Maya Lopez appeared on the Hawkeye series back in 2021. She was in cahoots with Kingpin but not aware that Kingpin was responsible for her father's death.

The first episode has to deal with a lot of backstory. From her mother's death in an accident. Leaving her Native American town to New York. Where her father works for the gangster Kingpin.

Eventually after Kingpin's apparent death. Maya moves back to her roots after getting a nasty injury.

This looks to be a moody series, more aimed at an older audience. I did not find the first episode that exciting. The backstory had to do a lot of heavy lifting. Luckily actress Alaqua Cox has presence.

What's going on?
mahfujrahmanq11 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't watched anything marvel has been putting out lately like 'she hulk', 'the marvels' , 'hawkeye' and whatnot. So, when I went to watch the first episode first thing I noticed that when the cave people came to this place and changing layers or skin whatever you call it , they put clothes on their body like these clothes were part of there layers or something. Got pretty confused there and I kinda knew in the back of my mind that it's not gonna be like Netflix's daredevil which is a wonderful show, one of the best tv show ever. So, I lowered my expectations and then the story went okay, maybe jumped a little bit but was okay. Next the boxing scenes, all of a sudden she is like she hulk, tossing the guy around and showing superior girl boss vibes (now remember, I haven't watched some other show, I don't know what her deal is) , it seemed pretty of. And then came the daredevil(In most cases, he is depicted as also possessing superhuman agility, reflexes, and stamina. In all cases, Daredevil is depicted as a master of martial arts and expert acrobat and gymnast, with his superhuman attributes aiding him in his mastery of these skills- his pretty basic skills), and she fought him like she was Luke cage, without even having any bruises or major injuries and daredevil just left the scenes. Is she Luke cage? Don't know.. Anyway, didn't lik it.

College-Film-Student Level Work
infinitetyler13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of these scenes have the simplicity and production value of a Super Nintendo video game. The not so great music is paired with long drawn out shots occasionally punctuated with early RPG video game levels of dialogue.

The club entrance scene is cringe. The fight scene starts off well, surprisingly violent, and then devolves into Adam West era Batman territory by the end. Lol poor Jeremy Renner can't catch a break.

There is some interesting camera work, particularly during the intro and some of the nature scenes.

The music is distractingly bad, and since no one is talking in the show and nothing interesting is happening on screen most of the time, it kind of defines the episode. And the longer the episode goes on the more I question why this show exists. It's like a 40 minute music video of terrible music.

What is happening?
gsantonas11 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy Marvel shows but this pilot was thrown together expecting people to already know the story of Echo. I knew a small amount and was completely confused. What are her powers? Why does she have them? Why did they split the girls in the beginning? Who is Fisk and why did she work for him? Why did her father? What is the story of Hawkeye and DareDevil with her? I am sure some of you are rolling your eyes but a pilot should set up the story and explain the back story. This jumped time and location with no explanation. I was excited about this show but now I am not sure I want to continue.

The music and cinematography is well done. As usual, the fight scenes and special effects are also good. But if you want to reach a bigger audience, you need to remember that n ot everyone has read all the graphic novels or seen every movie.

So far, it reminds me of Ms Marvel
SureCommaNot10 January 2024
Sure, the tone is different. But both shows have two things in common: poor storytelling and production value... and a lead actress who is just so compelling, it almost saves the show.

Immense respect for the lead here. She is just fantastic, and I hope she gets a lot more work. She's certainly perfect for this role, but is deserving of better quality from the showrunners. The pacing and editing of the show are pretty awkwardly disjointed, with a lot of characters who are just sort of... there... without really giving any narrative momentum. But I suppose it works (passably) for TV.

One critical note: When the cave dwellers became humans, their outer layer of skin fell off, but suddenly they had layers of fabric appear with no explanation. (They magically had clothing on.) This really took me out of it, because it made me aware they were trying to appease censors. But why dramatically show layers falling off, if you're going to make new layers appear a second later, without explanation? It would have worked better if either (1) the natives just didn't have clothes for that scene, or (2) the subtraction and addition of layers were presented in the same way, with similar effects. As it was, it was just disjointed, nonsensical, bad editing, and bad storytelling.

Episode 1
bobcobb30115 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was really surprised that Marvel decided to make a show around this character, but I guess that it ticks a lot of the boxes that they need and links a couple of the universes together.

They had a seemingly big budget open to the backstory that felt like it was in one of those movies, but then the story kind of fell flat. Not as much present day action as you are hoping for in a Marvel show.

Still, not many other alternatives right now and I am constantly looking for new TV to watch so I will absolutely finish it and go from there. Okay start, but we need a little bit more story depth for me.
